The California Baptist University Baseball and Softball Clubhouse occupies the former site of the softball office and locker room at the left-field corner of the baseball outfield. Its location is both strategic and symbolic: a shared threshold between two competition fields that brings athlete preparation, coaching, recruitment, game-day operations, and program history into one highly visible campus facility.
The main level places baseball functions to the west and softball functions to the east, with each program connected to team support spaces; the baseball locker room also opens directly to the ballfield. The second level contains coaching offices, open work areas, shared meeting space, and balconies with views to each field. Through compact planning, shared resources, and consolidated athlete, staff, and fan amenities, the building delivers strong value within a constrained footprint.
A primary challenge was inserting a new two-story facility into an active athletic complex while serving two distinct programs equally. The clubhouse needed to provide team privacy and identity, maintain efficient athlete circulation, support daily training and operations, and enhance the public game-day experience. The plans address these goals through a balanced bilateral organization around a shared central core. Locker rooms, training areas, laundry, kitchenettes, and team support spaces are efficiently distributed, while the lobby, concessions, conference room, and balconies serve as shared assets that unify the project.
Architecturally, the clubhouse complements CBU’s mission-style campus while introducing a contemporary athletic expression. From the field, a strong branded elevation with “Lancers” graphics, a central stone-faced cube, balconies, and clean massing creates a recognizable backdrop to play. Inside, the two-story lobby forms a ceremonial entry sequence. An interactive history display, suspended aluminum bats, championship exhibits, and an LED Rain Wall transform circulation into a celebration of program legacy. The locker rooms use bold blue-and-gold branding, integrated lighting, individual lockers, AV connectivity, and lounge-style seating to support performance and team culture. Offices and the conference room use transparency, daylight, and field views to connect coaching, study, and strategy to competition.
Sustainable and resilient design measures are reflected in the project’s compact site strategy, long-term flexibility, and reinforcement of existing campus infrastructure. By replacing underperforming facilities within the existing athletic complex, the clubhouse intensifies use of an already developed site rather than expanding outward. Shared support spaces reduce redundancy between programs, while durable finishes, flexible meeting areas, and adaptable office/support zones allow the facility to evolve with future needs. The project also included replacement of Totman Stadium’s turf, improving field performance, durability, and long-term usability. Together, the clubhouse advances environmental, operational, and social resilience by creating a lasting athletic hub that supports student-athlete wellness, institutional pride, recruitment, and the continued growth of CBU athletics. |
